Guantanamo Trials Should Be Open, written by David Schultz, via New York Times Opinion Pages
In an opinion published Wednesday, April 18, 2012, attorney David Schultz argues that the Bush-era secret military tribunals must be opened in order to present to the world that the US conducts fair trials.
"LAST week I stood before a military judge at Guantánamo Bay to argue that the press and public had a constitutional right to observe the proceedings of military commissions. "
After the attacks on the US on September 11, 2001, Bush brought US to the Dark Ages, enacting imprisonment without due process or habeas corpus. Added to the savage treatment was torture. In doing so, Bush ran against the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. He also violated the 1996 War Crimes Act.
Obama has followed Bush's Dark Ages road, leading US further into the quicksands of trials without justice. Now, with Obama claiming to possess the power to jail and execute American citizens without a trial, it's up to US to restore the rule of law in the US.
