Texas Community College Students Rebel against Vaccine

According to this article, approximatedly 10,000 students have left Austin Community College to protest the college's mandatory vaccine policy as being illegal.

According to the Austin Community College website, there were about 45,000 students enrolled in credit classes for Fall 2011. http://www.austincc.edu/about/

According to the Austin Community College application web page, the vaccine is required by Texas law. The application web page does not provide the name, number, or a link to the law:

"Texas law requires most incoming college students to be vaccinated against bacterial meningitis or to provide an exemption request declining the vaccine. The vaccination must be within the last five years and occur at least 10 days before the start of classes. Students cannot register until they complete this requirement. " http://www.austincc.edu/apply/immunizations/

From the above web address, the ACC website provides a link to FAQs. The webpage includes instructions for students wanting an exemption from the vaccine requirements.
The webpage here provides a link titled SB 1107 http://www.austincc.edu/apply/immunizations/#faq

The link travels to S.B. No. 1107, An Act relating to the vaccination against bacterial meningitis of entering students at public and private or independent institutions of higher education." This is titled "The Jamie Schanbaum and Nicolis Williams Act." http://www.legis.state.tx.us/tlodocs/82R/billtext/html/SB01107F.htm

Another article on 24 Medica notes:
"Even though no school or other agency can force anyone to take a vaccination, policies are written to give the distinct impression that the inoculations are compulsory. Any school administrator who says a student will be refused enrollment without a vaccine is lying."

The Austin Community College website offers this information to students regarding the school's request to inject their veins with the meningitis vaccine.

The Austin Community College website has this information for Health Science Students
http://www.austincc.edu/health/immunizations.php
Health Sciences students must comply with both Texas law and clinical facility requirements related to immunization and testing...Students must follow the posted immunization schedules. The minimum time intervals must be met...Applications to Health Sciences programs are NOT accepted without documentation of COMPLETED program immunization requirements.

According to a November 2011 article in the Austin newspaper, the meningitis vaccines cost for students ranged from $100 to $200. With many of the students financial situations, they must use some of their college financial aid money for the shot, but the Catch-22 is that they can't receive the financial aid until they have the shot. Thus, the state of Texas and college administration have scrambled in an attempt to give all qualifying students the vaccine.
